These words, the only ones spoken by Superman in the first teaser trailer for Superman, are rich with symbolism. The footage, which debuted Thursday after a press preview on December 17, was introduced by writer and director James Gunn. For the past two years, Gunn has promised that this film would mark the beginning of the new DC Universe, a vision he and co-chief Peter Safran are leading. The teaser makes it clear: this Superman — portrayed by relative newcomer David Corenswet (Hollywood, Twisters) — isn’t just entering a new cinematic world. He’s returning to the heart of the DC universe, joining a vast array of iconic characters. Superman is, in a sense, coming home to DC.
